What exactly is the point of a filter kit?

I got a zeikos filter kit with my canon rebel camera. I dont understand why i should have a purple or green lens on my camera. What help are these?
Also, I am a beginner sports photographer. Is a telephoto or wide angle lens better for action shots?

I'm not familiar with a lot of filters. I know that when shooting B&W you can use colored filters, blue, green and red, to alter the way the photo looks. I'm not sure what uses colored filters would have when shooting in color.
