Nokia 808 PureView; It's Goodbye iPhone… Again?

Nokia has announced its 808 PureView smart phone — or shall I call it a compact camera that takes and makes calls, texts and does much more — and slapped in an insane 41 megapixels resolution on a 1/1.2-inch sensor, the largest sensor of any smart phone so far. You know the physics — the larger the sensor, the better the image quality.

So I’m ditching my plan for an Apple again in favour of a Nokia, like the way I ditched the iPhone 4 in favour of Nokia N8 in 2010.

San Francisco Bay Bridge Time Lapse Frame Rate Test

It takes 4 seconds for the shutter to stay open, another 4 seconds to process the image and I left the remaining 2 seconds there as a buffer so the next exposure could be taken without any issues. I coaxed my friend Livia into driving me onto Treasure Island to scout out the perfect time lapse location on the island. I knew I wanted to capture an iconic San Francisco bridge at night but wasn’t quite sure how everything was going to pan out. I wanted to do a quick time lapse test trying out different frame rates at a slow shutter speed. The shutter speed was at 4 seconds and my f stop was at 7. I set the tripod and timed 10 second intervals. I did a tutorial on how I create my time lapse videos with QuickTime Pro HERE. All I knew prior was that I needed a clear shot of the traffic on the bridge. I just wasn’t sure how or where this was all going to come together....

I was a bit worried when flying in because the weather forecast called for rain on Saturday and street shooting with digital cameras in the rain can be dangerous but at the same time, shooting in the rain can provide for some cool photo... The goal of the day was to take everyone out of their comfort zone and to not only shoot discreetly on the street, but also to approach people for street portraits. Seventeen of us gathered downtown for a day of new friends, learning, and on the street shooting. There were two guest speakers and I had a keynote presentation on two ways to shoot on the street. We all did our introductions while we enjoyed coffee and muffins and then we headed towards base camp…in the rain. Well, that was because I was in Chicago since Thursday for the workshop you have been reading about here on the site....

In China, Guangzhou Advanced Maritime Academy has added a remote-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to their programme, and other institutions and companies in China, Korea, Hong Kong and other countries have also invested in their equipment. The throughput of cargo and containers at China's ports has been the largest in the world for the past five years with an annual growth rate of 35%. The mission of the academy is to train people to work in this burgeoning field using the latest technology. Over the past year, a number of Asian companies and government agencies have acquired underwater search equipment to aid in locating lost objects and assist in performing survey operations. The underwater vehicle the academy selected is the SeaLion made by JW Fishers,USA.

Larry Godfrey: The Perfect Shot

A: I own a Leica APO-Televid 62 spotting scope (angled lens). With this, I have a Leica Vario-Ocular B 16-48x eyepiece, supplied by Leica in 2004, and replaced in 2008 after a nasty accident of my scope falling in high winds onto a cement shooting line…. I also use a Leica Trica 1 carbon fibre tripod and DH1 Fluid Head, which have been kindly loaned to me from Leica Camera Ltd to assist me in the London Olympics 2012. I also have a Leica Pinmaster, to assist with accuracy and training. Q: Which Leica products do you use. A: 26 years, with a small International break for a couple of years while I completed my HND in Mechanical Engineering. Q: How much training/practice do you do on an average week. I am soon to start using an APO-Televid 82 with 25-50ww eyepiece....

Leica V-Lux 3 superzoom camera released

As with the majority of Leica's recent compact camera releases the specifications and aesthetics are virtually identical to a Panasonic Lumix compact, in this case the Panasonic Lumix FZ150. Leica has released a new superzoom compact, the V-Lux 3, which offers a 24x optical zoom from a 25mm wide angle lens. Barring a few slight alterations to the design the two cameras are extremely similar, which serves as no surprise seeing as Leica supplies a number of Panasonic's compact and CSC optics.
