Two Moons, Two Worlds: 1Q84

The Kindle has it's one or two advantages, but most of the time the more comfortable choice for me is the paper version. Occasionally use a Kindle for reading, but my first choice is always to hold a real, old fashioned book in my hands, turn the pages manually and sometimes catch a whiff of printer’s ink. Early on Tuesday I finished reading Haruki Murakami’s new book, 1Q84. The original Japanese version is in three separate volumes comfortable to hold and read without distracting thoughts of heaviness and strained wrists. Dazzling in its content and achievement, physically it was one of the most difficult books to read of my life. Underneath a fascination with the story I kept wishing I could read the book on my Kindle. 9 pounds with 944 pages and measuring 9....

Sprinter

Certainly a good camera, but highly over-priced and restricting, because you cannot change lenses.
If you are into classical looks, why not go for Olympus PEN E-P1 or E-P2. You only need the body, as PEN's can take lenses of your current GF1.

Preamble to the Film Battle

I set everything like it would have been on my Mamiya, and since almost all color film nowadays is daylight-balanced, I didn't feel like adjusting it. And then there's the differences in their own stocks. I love film, don't get me wrong, but man, I do love the stuff you can do with digital. Negative vs 'chrome,' a. k. a. slide, or positive films. you have to really know what you're doing when you shoot slide film. I know the 'chrome' stocks have amazing saturation, almost on the unnatural side, while having a slim exposure latitude. These are comparable shots to what you will see when I get the film back. Negative film, on the other hand, is quite forgiving, allowing for a lot of play when making prints (and hopefully when scanning).

1963

  I even got a job on the flight, to partner with an un-accompanied 10 year old boy, his mother and 3 other children were on the same flight.   My job was in the Technical Library, it was our job to find the right numbers so our "customer" could order the right part.   I was assigned to the Naval Supply Depot at the Naval Base in Yokosuka, it's a very large base with a lot of activity.   I was an Aviation Storekeeper but that didn't matter, we did all parts, food mixers to torpedo tubes, and Fruit fly Larvae to jet engines.   It was what we would call "old technology" at piston engine C118.   The flight began at Travis Air Force Base near Sacramento California.   We had stops in Hawaii and Wake Island, total flight time almost eighteen hours....

Review: Nikon COOLPIX L110

The Nikon L110, just like its predecessor, is a bridge camera with technology that looks good on paper. When we reviewed the L100 (in issue 101) our criticism was of its poor image quality, so we had our fingers crossed for the upgrade, placing pressure on the L110 to reinstate our faith in Nikon’s compact superzooms.
